The major end use for MPG is as a raw material in the manufacturing of unsaturated polyester resins. MPG is used as an active ingredient in antifreeze and as an anti-icing agent for car windshields, boats and airplane wings. MPG has a very low freezing point, and acts as a thickening agent, which helps the fluid adhere to surfaces. MPG is used as a solvent in paints, coatings, enamels and varnishes. MPG improves the properties of paints because its slow evaporation time lengthens the time the paint remains suitable for application.
MPG is manufactured in two different grades in Iran, industrial grade and pharma grade.
Major use for MPG
Industrial Grade:
- manufacturing of unsaturated polyester resins.
- as an active ingredient in antifreeze and as an anti-icing agent for car windshields.
- production of polyglycols for use in hydraulic and brake systems.
- as a solvent in paints, coatings, enamels and varnishes.
Pharma and food grade:
- Solvent for food additives (i.e., colors, antioxidants, enzymes and emulsifiers).
- Flavor agent.
- Humectant and stabilizer in items such as fruits, vegetables and bakery goods.
- Low-temperature heat-transfer fluids involving indirect food contact, such as brewing and dairy uses, as well as refrigerated grocery display cases.
- Plasticizer and softening agent for items such as cork seals.
- Solvent for printing inks used in food packaging.
- Equipment cleaner, to remove contamination from food processing equipment.
- MPG is used as a non-active ingredient or carrier.
